The Old Post Office Cafe in Carnelian Bay

Disclaimer! Went here during Covid and was served outside using takeout method, so don’t know if that has affected their quality. Breakfast isn’t complicated, but the details matter when creating a good breakfast. This place has massive portions, way too much in fact, but it’s counteracted by the disappointing quality. I received mediocre (weak) coffee, under cooked potatoes, bland eggs, and mediocre pancakes with the worst artificial syrup I’ve ever had. I do love how big the portions are and commend them for that, as well as their method for serving people on their outdoor seating area. But just can’t recommend the food based on its quality. BTW my bill for a combo breakfast and cup of coffee was $23.

Great little place, with friendly staff, and great food

Old fashioned coffee shop, good for basic eats. All decent meals from the breakfast choices through lunch items, with all available til they close at 2 pm.Nothing great, but everything except the coffee is decent. The coffee is Farmer Bros on bunsen burners. A 50's throwback.Would add a star if they had decent coffee, and upped their game a bit on the food.

They open at 6:30am. Best breakfast if you plan to hit the slopes early. The staff was so friendly and nice in the morning. We had Californian omelette. It was delicious and just enough calories for the day. Pancakes 🥞 (included) were delicious!Nice atmosphere. We were very happy to be there. And best of all, it was less expensive than many other places we’d tried. Thank you!

Nice food, good prices. I had the Turkey avocado sandwich which was good and filling , just the right meal before a long hike! Dog friendly patio

Food was ok. Our server was pleasant but the older lady at the register was completely rude. Will not be back here.

Probably one of the better places to grab breakfast in the area. Lowered rating for a couple reasons, entire party had to be present before seating. The wait for food items to arrive was too long. By the time food was ordered it took 25 mins to get to our table. I’m fearful when this place gets even busier, but does have decent options to choose from.

From the very first interaction with the staff, the host/server was very rude. Just asking for a table and he made a gesture of displeasure, seemed like he was in a foul mood and as a costumer, seemed like he was taking it out on us and it really ruined the mood. If you are vacationing around lake tahoe, there are 1000 times better places than this place.

My family and I came to this restaurant and were greeted with a negative attitude. When asked about the number of people in the party, we said five. The older man greeting, gave us a nasty look and repeated the number with a pugnacious attitude. We immediately felt completely uncomfortable but decided to wait a little anyways. Realizing that we weren't welcomed there, we decided to leave. Hope no one else has an experience like this.

Decent breakfast with nice outdoor seating. We had the omelettes with potatoes, which we're good.

Good old fashioned clean coffee shop decorated in Americana and Lake Tahoe decor. L.E. friendly staff, prompt service, large portions that are reasonably priced. On the main highway next to Century 21 Realtor. My new breakfast spot when passing thru. A must try!

Very friendly atmosphere. Had a large party of non English speaking Peruvian kids which could have been difficult but the staff was excellent all the way around! Thanks guys! Great food.

Good value for money! Food was great! Portions (full orders) were huge. Coffee was not watered down (yay!). Servers were awesome. Not as busy as it is lean season but I could imagine how this place can be packed during peak season.

Average Cafe food (a bit overpriced) in a very crowded and noisy service area. They really should learn the advantages of pavement in their parking area too.

Highly recommend the Old Post Office. It's a small cosy place, easy to reach, close to the lake, with delicious food, whether you want to have breakfast, lunch or brunch. Portions are rather big (maybe it's simply the American size, unsure).

A cozy, traditional American breakfast place. We picked this restaurant for our last Tahoe trip vacation. It was during the labor day weekend. We arrived there around 10am and there was a little wait for the table. We sat in the outdoor area in the rear, which was a comfortable sitting area. The service was good and the food were good as well, nothing fancy, but taste good.Be prepared to wait at least 20 mins in the busy weekend.

This place is pure Americana! Order your eggs any way you want them, the coffee mug stays full and you pay at the front on your way out the door. There is not one thing this place could be doing better about its food or the way it treats its customers. If you don’t have a good grasp of reality, stick to Starbuck’s.

The best place for breakfast in Lake tahoe by far. Smoothies are incredible, food its authentic and delicious, and the staff are on point every time with fast service and HUGE smiles! No question GO HERE FOR BREAKFAST!!!

Busy for breakfast but the food is worth the wait. Good service.

The food here was delicious and the wait staff was more than helpful and nice. They are all foreign but speak very good English and are very polite. The only thing I can gripe about is that we had a larger party and wanted to split the bill. They would not let us do this and we had to figure out how to give each other cash on the back end. A little thing I know, but when you go to any other restaurant, they usually are more willing to help. Again the food was great!

Outdoor dining only. In cardboard to go containers. Friendly service, but slow Nice outdoor dining area. Will be back when we can eat on real plates.

This seemed like a place where the locals go. It was also really good both service, cleanliness and food. Was really happy that I had found it. Got myself a Chicken Fried Steak and Hot Chocolate :)

The Old Post Office has been a mainstay for breakfast and lunch on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe for around 40 years. You will not be disappointed.

Definitely a hole in the wall type of place. Food was delicious and service was great. Would recommend anyone looking for a homey meal whether it be breakfast lunch or dinner.

Everything is super delicious here. We have ordered pan cakes with scrambled eggs and potato wedges and veggie omelette. Pan cake were so yummy and were not having taste of baking soda at all which is very rare 😊. Definitely this will be our future trips breakfast restaurant for sure.

Always a treat! Great folks, great food; an indulgence to be sure. The Hangover Special is special even if you don't have a hangover. Usually pretty busy so plan accordingly.

My wife and I were visiting from out of town and decided to give you guys a shot. Great biscuits and gravy and quick service!

I might generally give this place five stars, but I learned on our recent visit that it is not good for larger parties. They have great food, a fun atmosphere and generally friendly service. This last visit we had a party of 14, which they accommodated relatively quickly during a busy time, but did so with an attitude that they’d prefer we weren’t there. Otherwise, great place! We’ve been coming here for 11 years and have never been disappointed. My favorite sign in the place reads something like, “We don’t have WiFi. Put your phones down and talk to someone. Pretend like it’s 1995.”

Great restaurant with nice staff and tasty food. It’s a clean and warm place. Perfect for this raining day. 4 of us came in around 10:30. Got seated right away. Ordered egg Benedict, teriyaki sandwich, California omelette with toasts, Denver omelet with pancake. Everything was delicious. Highly recommend!
